Position Overview
The Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church is seeking a strategic, mission-driven financial leader to serve as its Conference Treasurer/Director of Administrative Services.
This executive-level role functions as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Annual Conference and is responsible for the overall financial leadership, stewardship, and administrative operations of the organization. The Treasurer plays a critical role in advancing the Conference’s mission and in supporting the mission of The United Methodist Church (¶120) and the ethos expressed in the General Rules (¶104) by ensuring sound financial management, long-term sustainability, and effective support of ministry across the region.
In accordance with ¶619 of the 2020/2024 Book of Discipline, this position oversees conference financial systems, pension and health benefit programs, treasury operations, and insurance programs, while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership
Provide vision and leadership for the Conference’s financial strategy and long-term sustainability.
Advise the Bishop, Council on Finance and Administration (CF&A), and other leadership bodies on financial planning and risk management.
Lead development of the annual budget and oversee financial forecasting and performance.
Financial Operations & Stewardship
Oversee all financial operations, including cash management, investments, and financial reporting.
Ensure strong internal controls, compliance, and adherence to nonprofit financial best practices.
Serve as primary liaison for the annual audit and implement audit recommendations.
Benefits & Administrative Oversight
Oversee clergy pension and health benefit programs in collaboration with denominational partners.
Provide leadership and supervision for key administrative staff functions, including IT and benefits administration.
Support effective personnel policies and systems in coordination with Conference leadership.
Organizational Partnership & Governance
Serve as a key partner to Conference boards, agencies, and leadership teams.
Provide financial analysis, reporting, and guidance to support decision-making.
Oversee conference insurance programs, including property and casualty coverage.
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
Minimum 7–10 years of senior financial leadership experience
Demonstrated expertise in financial management, budgeting, and strategic planning
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
High integrity and ability to manage confidential information
Preferred
CPA or Master’s degree (MBA, MAcc, or similar)
Experience in nonprofit, faith-based, or connectional organizations
Familiarity with pension and benefits administration
