The Episcopal Diocese of Alabama is currently accepting applications for the Canon for Mission Support position. The Canon for Mission Support provides day to day financial oversight of the Diocese, serves as Assistant Treasurer and Assistant Secretary of the Diocese, has key roles in administration of church insurance and pension fund, is responsible for property management. To the fullest extent, this role supports the implementation of the vision of the Bishop and diocesan leadership, building a strong connection with the Bishop, staff, clergy, and lay leaders.

This senior staff position is open to lay and ordained candidates, reporting directly to the Bishop. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides day to day financial oversight and management of the diocesan corporations, LLCs, and various ministries and organizations including management of short-term investments,
payables, receivables, long-term investment transactions, purchasing, and accounting.
2. Coordinates and manages the annual budget process for diocesan ministries.
3. Serves as the Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the central corporation assuming annual election by the Diocesan Convention to these positions.
4. Monitors and guides compliance with government and church regulations covering personnel, buildings, property, finance and accounting including trust and endowment accounting.
5. Provides a link for the diocese with the Church Pension Fund becoming well acquainted with Church Pension Group (CPG) policies and procedures and participating in CPG sponsored conferences and educational
events.
6. Serves as diocesan contact for Church Insurance Company (CI) and works with CI in insuring parishes and properties of the diocese and monitors coverage through alternative insurers.
7. Coordinates the diocesan group plan for worker’s compensation insurance for employees of the diocese, parishes, and ministries including risk management, compliance, and invoicing.
8. Actively provides information, and guidance to parishes on issues of administration, finance, investing, accounting, legal and canonical compliance, and general management of church business activities.
9. Manages IT functions including software purchases, support, and licensing, equipment
purchases and service for the bishop’s office. Responsibility includes oversight of both data and voice communications and arrangements for staff training in the use and safeguarding of IT.
10. Oversees the Safeguarding program and background checks for lay employees and volunteers including development and application of the Diocesan Policy on Sexual Misconduct Prevention working with the Standing Committee.

11. Oversees the audit process for the diocese and monitors parish compliance with canonical requirements for annual audits.
12. Provides staff support to the Department of Finance, the Trustees of the Consolidated Trust and Designated Funds of the Diocese, the Department of Architecture, and the Diocesan Council. Serves on additional Departments and diocesan bodies as directed by the Bishop. Meets with the Diocesan Council as an Officer of the Diocese.
13. Manages and disposes of all excess property directly owned by the diocese or received by the diocese through a parish dormancy. Assists parishes in the management of all properties in use by the Church.
14. Serves as the Building Manager for Carpenter House and oversees management of properties directly owned by the diocese.
15. Serves as supervisor for the following staff positions: Bookkeeper, Database Coordinator and Receptionist, and Assistant Receptionist(s).
16. Serves as an Intake Officers for the Diocese and provides administrative support for the Disciplinary Process for Clergy in cooperation with the Bishop, Chancellor, and Church Attorney.

Other Expectations
Meet with the Bishop on a regular basis at the discretion of the Bishop. Attend and support bi-weekly all-staff meetings and facilitate a once-a-month meeting of the Mission Support team. Attend Diocesan Convention assisting as requested and attend other department retreats or meetings off-site as needed. Participate in continuing education provided by the Episcopal Church.
