Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, Virginia, seeks a full-time Director of Youth Ministries.
Job Summary: The Director of Youth Ministries is responsible for Emmanuel’s ministry to middle school and high school youth, and college-age adults by modeling Christian discipleship as well as equipping families to be disciples of Christ, directing volunteer leadership, encouraging the congregation to partner in the faith formation of young people, and leading the integration of youth into the life of the congregation. Demonstrates a core understanding of competencies for vocational development as outlined in the Leadership Competencies for Faith Formation by the ELCA Youth Ministry Network https://www.elcaymnet.org/competencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Build relationships with middle school and high school youth, college-age adults, and parents.
Recruit, train, and direct adult and student volunteers to develop, plan, run, attend, and grow programs such as:
Work with the Staff Support Team to ensure volunteers working with youth are trained on the Child Protection Policy.
Collaborate with Pastors, Director of Christian Education, and the Education Team for the middle school confirmation program which may include organizing pre-lesson group activities, teaching, organizing events, and training/mentoring the teen guides.
Collaborate with Pastors, Council, staff, and congregational team leaders, integrate youth into the overall life of Emmanuel, and caring adults into the lives of youth by providing cross-generational opportunities and utilizing youth volunteers just as one would adults.
Help connect college students with campus ministries and maintain connections with them.
Be present at church each Sunday for the duration of the morning’s activities. Be aware of and participate when able in other activities at the church where youth typically are present.
Publicize and promote activities and opportunities through the weekly worship folder, monthly Evangel newsletter, and other media, coordinating such efforts with the Director of Communications and other office staff, as appropriate.
Stay current on youth ministry best practices by attending training and continuing education.
Report to Pastors, Council, and Youth Team on activities and accomplishments of Emmanuel’s youth programs.
Liaise with Youth leadership in the synod and greater ELCA to integrate Emmanuel’s youth program into other synod-wide and greater ELCA youth activities.
A bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
Three or more years of experience in youth ministry (preferably within the Lutheran Church).
Commitment to following Christ with a record of active congregational worship participation.
Passion and heart for young people; warm, welcoming personality.
Effective interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and computer/social media skills.
Commitment and proven ability to build relationships and work harmoniously, effectively, and confidentially with youth, adults, youth team, pastors, and other church staff members.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church is located in Vienna, Virginia, and is a member of the ELCA. We have one lead pastor and are in the process of seeking an associate pastor and a director of youth ministries. We have a staff (full time and part time) of about 10. We have two worship services on Sunday morning (one contemporary and one traditional) and one Sunday evening service. We accept Jesus as our Savior and we seek to spread the Good News.
