Church looking for a Comptroller; shall have responsibility for administrating tasks and functions relevant to the financial operations on a day-to-day basis. In addition, they will also be responsible for delegating tasks to other staff or volunteer workers associated with the Finance Office. Will be accountable for the accounting operations, human resources and payroll. To include the production of financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
Manage outsourced functions
Oversee the operations of the accounting, human resources and payroll departments, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary entities, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures.
Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
Process payroll in a timely manner
Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
Maintain the chart of accounts
Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
Issue timely and complete financial statements
Coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual report
Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
Design and manage an effective annual performance evaluation process
Manage the annual budget and forecasts
Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
Provide a system of management ministry reports
Create and invest in a leadership and succession pipeline, creating a bench for the future
Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions and contract negotiations
Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
The comptroller candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major church or not for profit entity. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.
Ability to facilitate creative problem solving and independent thinking in ministries
Ability to motivate and bring excitement and excellence to Financial processes, training and leadership training
Able to initiate projects to remain focused and organized
Able to communicate directly and effectively in employee disciplinary process
Provide resources to employees seeking to employees seeking information on matters of effective management within established employment law guidelines and principals
Computer experience: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Accounting and database management
Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects
Ability to work under pressure in a confidential environment
Effective presentation, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to manage a budget and control expenditures
Other general responsibilities:
In addition to normal responsibilities, the Comptroller is a member of a team dedicated to Christian service and shall therefore seek at all times to conduct themselves in such a way that would be pleasing to the Lord.
Because of the confidential nature of individual membership records, ministerial counseling, and much of the correspondence of staff, it is essential that the Comptroller respect this confidence.
Adhere to church approved guidelines as set forth in Bylaws and Policies and Procedures Manual.
Perform other duties as requested by the Administrator, Executive Pastor and Pastor
