The Accountant will support daily, weekly, monthly accounting processes; assist with journal entries,
Account reconciliations, procedural reviews, process documentation, and provide reports for ministry
leaders and ministry coordinators as requested.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide financial services to church members, ministry leaders and professional staff
Maintains accounting program by posting account transactions
Handle a wide range of accounting functions including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and general ledger entries; recommend cost saving improvements
Verify if journal entries and all ledger accounts correspond
Administer reconciliation of all contract amounts
Assist in the set-up, managing, and tracking of financial data in our Accounting Church System
Analyze accounting process, identify issues and perform research on solutions to ensure efficient workflows.
Prepare balance sheets and income statements.
Assist in the preparation of ministry presentations, reports and other written materials.
Preparation of monthly billing and accounting entries; support month end, quarter end reporting requirements.
Enter weekly cash contributions.
Reconcile bank accounts.
Prepare monthly reports for the Cash Management Team, Deacon Board and Individual Ministry teams.
Prepare quarterly giving statements and annual contribution letters to church members.
Prepare for and cooperate with those appointed to perform yearly internal/external audit of financial records.
Prepare year-end financial reports for annual meetings.
Perform other necessary and related work as may be assigned by the Accounting Manager, Treasurer, or Senior Pastor.
Maintain confidentiality of all financial contribution information.
Support the leadership team in the Annual Budget Plan, Audit and Strategic Planning process
Works closely with all ministries within the church to explain financials to ministry personnel to ensure budgets are met; also includes meeting with each ministry head once quarterly
Review and reconcile charge card and expense card statements weekly/monthly
Obtain and review purchase receipts and supporting documentation from card users in a timely manner; verify that purchases are aligned with existing policies and practices of GCBC
Prepare weekly cash flow projection reporting
Participate in month and year end closing processes, primarily through journal entry preparation, vendor and account reconciliation and variance resolution, to ensure timely, accurate recording in compliance with GAAP, regulatory and church policies
Assist with vendor invoice entry or order processing (as needed)
Support annual audits of GCBC and related organizations
Serve as backup to the Accounting Manager
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Five years’ accounting and general ledger experience preferred
Experience with non-profit accounting preferred
Proficient in Accounting Church Software preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office; strong Excel skills
Ability to multi-task at the same time and manage one’s time productively
Strong analytical and forward-thinking skills
Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to interface at all levels
Be a self -starter; ability to work independently and in a team environment
Takes initiative to improve business performance that goes beyond the scope of the position
