Job Summary: The Director of Operations has overall responsibility for managing all church business affairs and daily operations.

Directly Supervises: Finance Coordinator Building and Grounds Superintendent Office Coordinator
Job Responsibilities and Duties: The primary management/supervisory responsibilities include:
Properties Management •Directs the church’s maintenance program by supervising the building and grounds superintendent and outside contractors. •Develops and administers policies and procedures concerning the use of all four church properties and facilities (three church buildings and a parsonage). •Together with the Trustees, works with architects, contractors and others in the evaluation, planning, building, remodeling and equipping of church buildings. •Works with staff to coordinate the schedule and maintaining the calendar for use of classrooms and other church facilities for meetings and activities, including internal church groups and outside community groups. •Develops and administers all agreements with third parties using church property. •Oversees the security of the church. •Evaluates the insurance needs of the church and reporting to the Trustees.
Financial Management •Oversees the Finance Coordinator with respect to all finance-related functions of the church including the receipt, deposit and disbursement of all church funds, the church’s financial record system, financial reporting, budgeting, tax reports, and annual audits or reviews of the church’s financial systems. •Develops and oversees the church budget (currently $3.6 Million). •Works for the Foundation Trustees to ensure appropriate management of the church’s Foundation. •Ensures the appropriate separation of duties necessary for financial accountability. •Works with the church Finance Committee on all financial management issues.
Personnel Administration •Supports the Senior Pastor in overseeing personnel matters, including development and administration of personnel policies and procedures, maintenance of personnel records, administration of the payroll and benefit programs for church staff, compliance with all federal and state labor laws. •Supports the work of the church’s Staff Parish Relations Committee on personnel matters.
Office Management •Oversees the Office Coordinator and provides general direction to the weekday operation of the church office. •Establishes and provides supervision over an effective system of using volunteers as office receptionist. •Facilitates the organization of volunteer help as needed.
General •Obtains advice on legal, business and tax matters for the church, consulting as appropriate with church committees. •Supports the work of the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and Staff Parish Relations Committee, and attends other committees as needed. •Participates in weekly staff meetings and prepares the agendas for the meetings. •Administers the budget for all functions under his/her supervision. •Coordinates the vacation schedules of the church staff. •Responsible for coordination and support for all special events including, but not limited to, weddings and funerals (working closely with the Wedding and Funeral Coordinator), and coordinating lunches for church events and meetings.
Job Skills and Requirements
•A bachelor’s degree in business or a related field or equivalent experience preferred. •A committed Christian and willing to participate in and support the programs of National United Methodist Church, typically on Sundays. •Can conceptualize his/her administrative and managerial responsibilities as a ministry and can verbalize the function of the job as a ministry. •Excellent verbal and written communication skills and is responsible for fostering effective communication in the church organization. •The ability to promote and manage a consensus decision-making process. •Knowledge of (i) generally accepted financial reporting and accounting principles and practices, and (ii) knowledge of computer systems, including financial software, word processing, electronic communication software, and membership software. •Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information, including but not limited to church member financial pledges and personnel matters. •Timely and consistent attendance, and availability in the evenings for committee and Church Council meetings. •Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as a team member of the church staff.
Additional Salary Information: Evaluation and Compensation – The Director of Operations reports to the Senior Pastor and will receive an annual performance review by the Senior Pastor. Compensation is reviewed annually by the Senior Pastor and the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
